The annual publication of the Health & Safety Executive's statistics on work-related accidents and enforcement action for 2010/2011 emphasises the importance of robust health and safety management systems and the cost of getting it wrong.

In 2010/11 there were 171 fatal accidents, 26,000 incidents resulting in serious injury, 1.2 million people suffering work-related illness and a total of 26.4 million working days lost.  Companies with more than 250 employees and those working in manual occupations were most likely to suffer a fatal or serious accident.

The highest risk industry sectors were again construction, agriculture and waste and recycling with 50, 34 and nine fatalities respectively.

In terms of enforcement action, there were 551 prosecutions brought by the Health & Safety Executive and local authorities, with a conviction rate of 94%.  Fines amounting to over £18.6 million were imposed, with an average fine of nearly £36,000 excluding prosecution costs.  Some 18,290 enforcement notices were also issued, a rise of over 13% on the previous year.
