Bond Pearce

Our clients tell us that they come to us because they want competition law advice that is crisp and relevant, from lawyers who are not afraid to weigh up the risks for them.  They also know that we will deliver superior value to that offered by many of our competitors.
The only way we can do this is to ensure that we have both a deep understanding of each client's business and the markets and sectors in which they operate and by having a great team of lawyers with relevant experience.

Our Competition law team's expertise spans all aspects of competition law:  behavioural, regulatory, compliance, mergers and state aid.

We understand the importance to our clients of delivering pragmatic and commercially focussed competition law advice.  Our style and approach mean we get to grips quickly with the procedural and substantive issues while always maintaining a clear focus on our clients' commercial and strategic objectives - ultimately enabling our clients to make informed commercial decisions.

We have traditionally focused on delivering sound and pragmatic behavioural and compliance advice.  More recently we have strengthened our team further to ensure that we are equally effective at advising clients on EC and UK merger control issues as well as offering competition regulatory and pure regulatory law advice.

Acting for a significant number of major organisations (UK and international), our practice competes with established City firms for high quality, international-focused work.

Our work

  • a global technology company on an international acquisition and the UK and multi-jurisdictional filing considerations triggered by this transaction
  • a group of companies on the establishment of a syndicate and how it should operate to avoid any competition law issues which may arise
  • a UK retailer on a potential abuse by a dominant supplier with an argument regarding excessive pricing.  Our advice was of fundamental importance as the supplier was threatening to cease supplying over a crucial trading period and required carefully judged but ultimately strong competition law advice to protect the client's business and reputation.  Our approach assisted our client to secure continued supplies while negotiating a better pricing deal
  • a major international insurer in relation to an important market study affecting its business and a subsequent paper submitted to the authority outlining the client's concerns
  • a retailer on the establishment of a collaborative joint venture and associated buying group to enable it to participate in a strategically important new market
  • an insurer in respect of an OFT investigation into the potential exchange of commercially sensitive information and the negotiation of suitable commitments to help close the matter
  • a power company in relation to a long-standing investigation by the European Commission (regarding alleged discriminatory pricing) and a subsequent hearing in front of the General Court
  • an international oil and gas company on access rights in the North Sea
  • a significant state-owned company, on a continuing basis, in relation to specific proposals emanating from its business and the potential implications under competition law generally and the relevant regulatory framework
  • an international holiday/travel company to ensure that its dealings are competition law compliant
  • a well known renewable energy company in relation to the grant of state aid to a third party for the development of public sector land for wind-generated renewable electricity

We can also provide you and your teams with competition law training, a refresh of your compliance programme or simply "Do's and Don'ts".
